Nader Aghakhani, Rahim Baghaei, Mohammad, Vafadar Afshar, Narges Rahbar: Urmia Medical Sciences University, Urmia, Iran.

Introduction: A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, thoughts and behaviours. It affects the way a person eats, feels, sleeps and thinks about things. Its symptoms are persistent sad, anxious or empty mood, feeling of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies, decreased energy, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, making decision and etc.

The first step in defeating depression is recognizing it.

It is normal to have some signs of depression some of the time. But five or more symptoms for two weeks or longer or noticeable changes in usual functioning is all factors that should be evaluated by a health or mental health professionals. The economic cost for this disorder is high, but the cost in human suffering cannot be estimated.

Methods and Materials: Our research is a descriptive study to evaluate depression frequency in students of Urmia University of medical sciences in Iran. 700 students were given a standardized beck questionnaire.
628 of them answered to it. All ethical issues were considered.

Results: The results of study in relation to demographic characteristic and depression shows that
53.2 % were male, 84% were single, 52.6 % had a degree of depression, 4 % had a severe depression. The finding indicates that there are no significant relationships between depression in married or single students: Its severity was high in the students whose mothers were dead and in non-native students, too.
Its frequency has no significant relationship with age, rank of birth and duration of education, but there is a significant relationship between depression and the bad marks in their lessons.

Discussion: Depression level in our university is very high that can affect on the quality of education and social behavior of the students. Much works must be done for solving of its problems. The best thing that can be done is to help them get treatment by encouraging the students to seek professional helps and offering emotional support. They mustn’t give in to negative thinking. They must take an active role in getting better and they must be good to themselves, when they are getting well .Internal changes are needed in problem assessment, self evaluation, and the expectations from himself/herself. External changes like recreations, stress management, communication, and medication can be used in relieving the symptoms and can make significant improvement in their mood and life adjustment. Much researches must be done about treatments.
