This retrospective study presents a treatment analysis with the atypical antipsychotic Aripiprazole performed in a combination of mental and physical health care delivery environments. To establish optimal follow up and coordination of care we engaged a collaborative effort between psychiatrists and family practice physicians in terms of determining the efficacy of treatment and establishing a medication side effect profile in routine daily practice.

A random sample of 125 patients with different emotional problems who visited our community mental health clinic was selected. Demographic and clinical variables of these patients were obtained from the primary care physicians. Outcome measures included general response, metabolic and nutritional changes, side effects and specific results of treating patients with a new antipsychotic drug.

Patients responded to treatment with Aripiprazole by demonstrating lowered psychotic manifestations (87%), decreased suicidal ideations (92%) and improved cognitive functioning (78%). We did not observe significant changes in glycemic control or plasma lipid profiles. A mean weight decrease was noted in patients taking Aripiprazole during the treatment period.

Conclusions: The new antipsychotic Aripiprazole appears to be safe and therapeutic in the treatment of psychotic manifestations.
