Abstract:

Objectives: Compilation of findings from own longitudinal studies (Cologne Study on Affective, Schizoaffective and Schizophrenic Disorders; HASBAP: Halle Study on Brief and Acute Psychoses) to demonstrate a continuum between schizophrenic psychoses and affective disorders.

Methodology: Results of long-term studies on patients with affective, schizoaffective and schizophrenic disorders as well as of comparative studies on patients with acute and transient psychotic disorders.

Results: Schizoaffective disorders occupy position in-between schizophrenic and affective disorders. They show a mixture of depressive, manic and schizophrenic symptoms and a longitudinal shift from one syndrome to another during a long-term course. The outcome is better than that of schizophrenia, but not as good as that of affective disorders.
Acute and Transient Psychotic Disorders show interesting differences to schizophrenia, but also to schizoaffective and affective disorders.

Conclusions: Schizoaffective and acute polymorphic psychoses do not seem to form a nosologic entity, but a continuum between schizophrenia and affective disorders, a phenomenon which will probably decoded by genetic sciences.

Key Words: Overlap of Spectra, Schizoaffective Disorder, Acute Polymorphic Psychoes, Psychotic Continum
