Method: In this cross - sectional study 140 hospitalized patients, who met the DSM-IV TR criteria for bipolar disorder (manic or mixed subtype) were selected through convenience sampling and evaluated for comorbid diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. The frequency of diabetes mellitus in the study groug compared with the expected frequency, for national norms.

Findings: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus among bipolar patients was (9.3%) significantly greater than expected from norms for general population (2.3%)

Results: The frequency of diabetes mallitus in hospitalized patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder was higher than in the general population. Manic - depressive patients with diabetes mellitus have long course of illness ( >10 years ). Possible reasons for this increased comorbidity include a causal relationship in which hypercortisolemia induces diabetes or diabetic vascular lesions contribute to mania , a genetic relationship between the disorders , an overlapping functional disturbance affecting similar regions of brain , or the effect of psychotropic medications.
