Psychological Treatments in Bipolar Disorders

Abstract:
Objectives: Review of studies of the benefit of psychological treatments added to standard care in bipolar disorders.

Methodology: Medline and PsychList search to identify all studies of psychological therapy in bipolar disorders, descriptive review of papers and meta-analysis of outcome.

Results: The different psychotherapies have a number of similar components. A meta-analysis of eight recent studies demonstrates a significant reduction in relapse rates (of about 40%) compared to standard treatment alone.

Conclusion: Efficacy studies suggest that psychological therapies have a role to play in the treatment of bipolar disorders, but effectiveness data is now required to allow a clearer definition of which subpopulations of patients with bipolar disorder are most likely to benefit and when these approaches should be used.
